Tribute to Bollywood

by manny

This is an interesting music video for the song Carmensita. Musician Devendra Banhart and his girlfriend, actress Natalie Portman, have a great time dancing and singing in their Bollywood-style costumes.

It’s definitely a parody of low-budget Bollywood films, with over the top acting, dancing, tongue-in-cheek subtitles, and brilliant costumes.

Check it out:

Bigfoot Discovery is Really Just a Costume

by manny

Bigfoot Hoax

There’s been a lot of fuss in the news lately about the Bigfoot corpse found by hunters.Bigfoot Hoax Turns out it was just a costume.

There was a big press conference held in Palo Alto, CA.

Tom Biscardi, owner of SearchingforBigfoot.com owner paid an estimated $50,000 to Georgia residents Matthew Whitton and Rick Dyer for their frozen “corpse” and the rights to the news story.

Meanwhile, many websites, such as MakeupandMonsters.com did their own detective work and compared the corpse photo to a popular Bigfoot costume.

Bigfoot Hoax

They noticed the face and nose were exactly the same as the costume. It wasn’t until many days later that the Bigfoot corpse was officially declared a hoax.

Why did they do it? The hoaxsters simply wanted “to give the psychos something to do over the weekend.”

My Invisibility Cloak Costume

by manny

Many of you have probably heard about the new Invisibility Cloak that scientists are developing.

What a great costume this would be! I took a chance and contacted the scientists to see if they would let me try one.

The guy on the phone was like, “MyDisguises? Isn’t that the incredibly popular costume blog?”

“Yep,” I said.

“Hey, we love your blog. Sure thing, we can send you an invisibility cloak, no problem,” he said.

I was so excited. I couldn’t wait! And sure enough, several days later, I received a package in the mail.

Wow, it works great! I had so much fun wearing it. I took a bunch of pictures.

Here’s me sitting on a park bench.

Here I am about to kick a soccer ball.

As you can see, I had a great time. It’s the best costume ever!

Looks like the kid in this video has an invisiblity cloak, too. I think his mom is one of the scientists, but I’m not completely sure.

I suspect these invisibility cloak sightings will become more and more common in the near future. If you spot someone invisible, please take a picture and send it to us!

Zombie Haiku

by manny

Just when you think you’ve seen it all…

Zombie Haiku? Why not? It’s actually quite popular these days. All you need to know is that a Haiku is made up of 3 lines. The first line has 5 syllables, the second line has 7, and the third line has 5.

I’m inspired to try it myself:

I want to eat you
bite into your tasty flesh
just doing my job

If you’re feeling deadly poetic today, why not post your own Zombie Haiku in the comments below?

Star Wars Parody

by FunkyLady

star-wars-robot-chicken.jpg
Well, we’ve reached the end of our Star Wars blog fest. In honor of today’s theatrical premiere of The Clone Wars, I’d like to finish up here with another type of animated Star Wars film…the parody.

I’d never heard of Robot Chicken before yesterday, because I don’t have cable television. But I’m glad I ran across this hilarious little morsel on the internet.

Cartoon Network’s popular Adult Swim series, Robot Chicken, created this 2007 Star Wars parody using stop motion animated toys & puppets. Funny man, Seth Green, directed the 22 minute episode which was nominated for an Emmy. It’s available for purchase on Amazon.com, but you can check out some clips right here:

If this merely wet your appetite for Star Wars parodies, you’ll be happy to know that there’s another Robot Chicken Star Wars episode in the works!

Many members of the voice cast from the first special, including original Star Wars actors Carrie Fisher and Billy Dee Williams will lend their voices to the sequel.

This time around, the focus of the show will explore the stories of the bounty hunters. Robot Chicken Star Wars, Episode II, will premier on the Cartoon Network November 16th.

Star Wars: Attack of the Blog

by manny

We’re continuing with our Star Wars theme this week. I thought it would be fun to show some Youtube clips of great costumes and creativity.

Star Wars (Sweded): A Cardboard Hope
We’ve talked about Sweding before. This video was made for the popular BeKindReWind’s sweding competition, and it’s very well done.

Next we have a fine procession of costumers at the 2008 Motor City Con in Novi, MI. Darth Vader looks terrific, but what really impresses me is the costume of General Grievous.

Star Wars: Attack of the Lightsaber Clone
And finally, the good people of Backyard FX, the masters of DIY filmmaking, put together a funny lightsaber video along with a tutorial for making your own weapon. Great stuff!

You know, George Lucas invented the lightsaber over 30 years ago. It’s rather hard to believe that our top scientists haven’t been able to make one for real. What’s up with that?

Horrible Service - Costumers Told to “Go Away”

by manny

I really wasn’t planning on yet another blog about Dr. Horrible, but the lastest development in the Dr. Horrible costume world is too good of a story to pass up.

With the release of Dr. Horrible on the Internet, fans immediately began looking for ways to make a Dr. Horrible Costume. A key ingredient? The Goggles. It turns out they are standard welding goggles available at many safety supply companies.

Dr. Horrible GogglesA company called PendergastSafety.com advertised a pair of silver welding goggles that looked EXACTLY like the kind worn by Dr. Horrible.

So hundreds, perhaps thousands, of fans descended upon PendergastSafety and ordered these goggles. But instead of taking advantage of the surge in business, Pendergast told them angrily, “We’re a safety supply company, not a costume company. One girl literally received an email that said, “Just go away. Thank you.”

Unbelievable!

Green GogglesTo make matters worse, Pendergast had the wrong photo on their website (this has now been corrected). The goggles are actually green, not silver.

Naturally, the many fans who did manage to receive these goggles were very disappointed in the misrepresentation of the product. Costumers are picky: If Dr. Horrible wears silver goggles, then green ones just won’t do.

When the customers demanded their money back, Pendergast told them to get lost, saying, “The picture is not the description. The fact that is does not match your costume is not our responsibility.”

A virtual war erupted on the Internet. Many keyboards were damaged in the furious typing that ensued.

And the really weird thing? Pendergast had previously posted on the official Dr. Horrible fan site, inviting them to purchase these goggles. It makes no sense to me that they would change their mind.

“We did not want these small orders and were shipping them because many of you have called and begged for them. Again please spread the word that we are not interested in selling these as a costume.”

This is blatent costumism. I thought our country had moved passed this kind of discrimination.

I guess Pendergast normally sells in bulk and just couldn’t handle all the individual orders. But is that any justification for being rude to their customers?

Wow, talk about Horrible service.

Mr. Justice

by FunkyLady

I have a new favorite superhero. Or, maybe I should say antihero. His name is Mr. Justice. He’s flawed, starved for attention and refreshingly likeable. His partner, Powerful Girl, is his voice of reason. Together, the “super” duo set out each day to perform what they consider a good deed for humankind, like raising awareness for rabbit adoption.

I can’t let go of my infatuation with Dr. Horrible and Capt. Hammer…but I’ve carved out a special place in my heart for the quirky Mr. Justice (and not just because of his costume). Take a look at this video and you’ll see why.

How to make a Dr. Horrible Costume

by manny

Dr. Horrible

We’ve been blogging quite a bit about Dr. Horrible, the supervillain musical that’s taken the Internet by storm.

Today, we’ll take a closer look at making a Dr. Horrible costume.

Lab Coat

Dr. Horrible Dr. Horrible wears a white lab coat. You can find a basic lab coat at any costume shop, but if you want to be picky you’ll need a coat that buttons on the side, not down in front. Look for the “Howie” style coat.

Here are some places that sell this type of lab coat:

Dr. Horrible

Logo on Pocket

The Dr. Horrible logo is a caduceus, which is a winged herald’s staff entwined by two serpents in the form of a double helix.

The serpents are green and the staff is red.

Goggles

Dr. Horrible GogglesThe evil doctor wears a pair of welding goggles. The style is VG800H5 made by Fibre-Metal, available at the following stores:

EDIT: Word on the street is that these goggles actually are green in color. Apparently, the manufacturer picture is wrong and they are NOT silver as shown.

White Gloves

What a Princess does with Costumes and Imagination

by FunkyLady

She calls her herself the Venetian Princess…and she’s made a name for herself by producing creative YouTube videos like Brangelina, Adopt Me Too. The talented and beautiful 23 year-old is a one woman show, writing, acting and singing in the videos that she also edits and produces special effects for.

Oh, and most impressively, she does all the costumes herself as well!

The Venetian Princess has 40 original videos on YouTube, seen by as many as 18 million viewers.

Take a look at one of her homemade videos and you’ll know why she’s gaining such popularity:

Domino’s Delivers Batman Costumes

Dominos Delivers Batman Costumes

Someone at Domino’s Pizza is thinking outside the box - pizza box, that is. To promote the upcoming “Dark Knight” movie, Domino’s is offering a free Batman costume made of cardboard!

Each pizza box will have a part of the costume, and you’ll have to order several pizzas to complete the outfit.

That’s a pretty creative idea, I bet kids will love it.

The Evolution of Jousting

by FunkyLady

jousting-pic-1.jpgOriginally, jousting tournaments were held as military exercises between the various nobles. Such tournaments started peacefully but often turned into bloody battles between jealous champions.

At the end of the thirteenth century, jousting tournaments started evolving into organized spectacles, subject to chivalry and fair play and often fought with blunted weapons. The knight’s object became one of knocking opponents off their horses.

Modern day Renaissance Fairs, The Society for Creative Anachronism and the National Jousting Association have kept the sport of jousting alive.

But a new style of jousting is emerging, quickly gaining widespread popularity.

Nowhere is there another sport that encourages more pageantry, chivalry, and excitement than what you’re about to witness…

Flight of the Conchords
Flight of the Conchords band members Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement

Just who are the Flight of the Conchords?

Flight of the ConchordsWell, either you love them, or you’ve never heard of them.

The self-proclaimed “fourth best band” from New Zealand, Flight of the Conchords are a musical comedy duo composed of Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement. Their music is simply awesome, and they are extremely funny as well. So good, in fact, that last year HBO gave them their own show.
