Live Fonts

by FunkyLady

Have you ever thought of your computer’s fonts as living entities? Me too. When I’m lying in bed at night, I often ponder what the fonts would look like if I were to meet them in person. Thanks to this College Humor video, I don’t have to wonder any more…and maybe I’ll get some sleep. Check it out:

As good as Comic Sans looks in costume, I now know he’s not the font for me. Ransom is definitely more my style!

Let The Games Begin…In Costume

by FunkyLady

orange-dresses-olympic.bmp

When it comes to throwing a party as big as the Olympic opening ceremony, the Chinese take it very seriously.

olympic-pink-dresses.jpg

It’s a chance to showcase their culture and history to the world so the show must be spectacular.

lights-olympic-costume.jpg

Based on some of the pictures I’ve seen, they succeeded. The 3 ½ hour show highlighted 5000 years of history, featured 20,000 performers and 33,000 fireworks.

And apparently, the creators of the show spared no expense on costumes.

I was not able to include some of the most impressive costumes here, but you can view them on the NBC Olympic web site.

Minutemen Costumes from the Watchmen movie

by manny

Minutemen from the upcoming Watchmen movie
Minutemen from the upcoming Watchmen movie

Harry over at AintitCoolNews just broke an exclusive story regarding the upcoming Watchmen movie. In the movie, there’s a group of old superheroes called Minutemen (shown above).

Who are the Minutemen? Well in WATCHMEN - it was the first team of superheroes that formed in 1939 and pulled a BEATLES in 1949. In the pic you’ll see the classic SILK SPECTRE and NITE OWL… you’ll see CAPTAIN METROPOLIS, MOTHMAN, SILHOUETTE, COMEDIAN, DOLLAR BILL and with the noose… HOODED JUSTICE.

I love this photo… just look at those costumes, the hairstyles and makeup. Isn’t that classic? It’s that attention to detail that I think bodes very well for this project.

Yes, those costumes are sensational. They look so authentic for the year 1940. The Watchmen movie will come out next year, I can’t wait!

Veggie Costumes

by manny

Give Peas a Chance

Last Sunday, New York City hosted the Veggie Pride Parade. People came dressed as their favorite vegetables and protested the eating of meat.

The parade began in the meatpacking district and finished at Washington Square Park, where vegan jerky sticks were handed out and a costume contest was held.

Unmasking the Community - Should I Get Into DIY, part 2 - Creativity Aside, How Else Do I Prepare?

by collin

In the first segment exploring this topic, we discussed the questions that most would-be DIY’ers may ask themselves when deciding just how much they want to make their own costume. Ultimately, we stressed thinking outside the box and being as creative as you can be. Once you’ve crossed that road, you just have to execute.

So what happens when you’ve got the ideas? You’re not short on inspiration, but short on direction… where do you go from there?

Well not to be a dead horse, but preparation is key. You need to know what you’re going to use, where you’re going to get it from, and how to plan to use it properly.

Materials make the outfit

Taking a nod from Tobey Maguire in the first Spiderman movie, you should have already planned everything out. But now you need to know what to use. Depending on what you’re making, you can find most of your needs at a fabric store. However, the right material will be essential.

Some costume designers get real clever with their getups, and move outside the typical reaches of fabrics. This Big Daddy for example really called for more heavy duty and artistic production. Whatevier your choice, remember that the dfference between going big or cheaping out can make or break a good outfit.

Get some expert advice

By expert advice, we don’t mean go have a pro costume maker tell you what to do. That would eliminate the fun and excitement behind the whole process. What’s more important is that you find those who have some know how and that they give you ideas. You want to go into your first costume making experience with the varying options that are out there. It’s one thing to not try something, it’s another to never know it was an option.

So what does that mean? It means you can talk to anyone you know who has expertise in any type of costuming. Try theater friends. Maybe you know people into cosplay. Find a crafty friend, an artistic professional, a web celeb who has made their fame on making cool things. They’re everywhere and they love to talk about themselves.

Time to begin already?

Well, there comes a time when you can plan no more, and it’s just time to get ready and down to it. Check all needful things off the list. Sketches? Check. Ideas? Check. Materials? Check. Supplies? Check.

What else is missing…

As for right now, you’re ready. If you’re planning early enough in advance, you already know you’re going to be running into some issues and you have time to make mistakes. We’ve given you all we know in terms of plans and ideas on how to get things done in the pre-phase.

If you’ve made it this far, you are surely ready to get some DIY costume making under your belt. Stay focused on your goal and you may end up the guru you thought you could be.

Bonus Ideas

  • Check out Instructables for some ideas on how to make some convincing effects and elements
  • Try Craft Magazine for clever spins on ideas you already have.
  • Take your questions to forums. If you’re going Cosplay, you have a number of specific sites just planned out for you. Cosplay.com has one of the most active cosplay forums online.
  • Also try your questions at Yahoo! Answers. You’re likely to find all manners of ideas.
  • Plan to show off… look for groups, events, and other exciting reasons to get your costume noticed. If you have a firm deadline to work for, you’ll hit it. You also can afford the captive audience. Kostume Kult is great for news here, and soon we’ll be covering the Burning Man festival.

MyDisguises Last Minute Christmas Gift Ideas

by collin

Continuing along the theme of the Holidays, we’re going to help you out with a bit of your last minute shopping. Yes, that’s right. If you have a costume lover in your family or circle of friends, it can be hard to find the right gift for them. You don’t want to get them something they’ll never use. Most people really like to think hard about the costumes they’re going to wear. Since we do this all the time, we figure we can help you out.

Gifts for the Cosplayer

Cosplayers like to think out and make their own costumes, so you probably won’t want to get them any costume pieces. Here are some things they will like:

  • Tickets to an upcoming con - Anime, gaming, comic, and cosplay conventions are going on just about all year long. The bigger ones cost more for a spot, but if you really want to impress get them a ticket. You can either find out what cosplay they’re currently working on and see if there’s a con that will be fitting for that particular cosplay. If you know they’ll love the chance to go to any show, check out this list of cosplay cons that happen all year long.
  • Gift Certificate from Cosworx - Cosworx is an online shop specializing in cosplay accessories that may be hard to find elsewhere. You can pick up a gift certificate online and let them do their own shopping.
  • Resupply their materials - True cosplayers are likely to need all the right gear. Maybe their sewing machine is old and rusty. Maybe they just need a restock of gear. Either way, help make sure they have all the tools necessary to execute.

Gifts for the D.I.Y. Costume Builder

These friends aren’t too different from the cosplayer, but there are still some unique ideas you can offer them.

  • Subscription to Make and Craft Magazine - Make and Craft Magazines, as far as we’re concerned, are the premier resources for the Do-It-Yourself junkie. Whether you get them the magazines for fun or for inspiration, they’ll love it. Even some of us who don’t DIY get a kick out of reading these.
  • Tools, tools, tools - A true DIY’er needs tools. I don’t mean just hammers and wrenches, although those could be necessary for some projects. They needs all kinds of art and building tools. Scissors, staplers, clamps, clips, paints, stuffings, etc. The list goes on and on.
  • A space to show off - Like cosplayers go to conventions, DIY’ers use the Internet to show their work. If they’re serious about what they do, help them get a blog up and running. They may need some money for a domain or hosting. See what you can do to help them get their work out there and noticed.

Gifts for the Costume Collector

This is a harder crowd to please. It’s hard to know just what you can do for this enthusiast without breaking bank. Here are a few of our ideas:

  • A trip to a museum of choice - If they’re into historical costumes and fashion, take them to the Met’s Costume Institute. Are they and Elvis fan? Stop by Graceland if you’re in the south or Vegas if you’re in the west. Comic book fan? Try getting tickets to the next Comic Con. If you’re creative, that special costume freak of yours will get one the best gifts they’ve ever had.
  • The Costume Collector’s Companion 1890-1990 - This book is ideal for anyone who likes to collect old outfits and costumes. Rosemary Hawthorne, also known as the “Knicker Lady” even does her own shows tracing the history of underwear. The book is funny and helpful to anyone who loves collecting costumes. Pick it up!

Gifts for the Movie/Comic Book Costume Nut

I threw these three in together for good reason. A lot of the items these collectors want cross boundaries. Here’s what we came up with:

  • Something special from PremierProps - PremierProps.com sells actual movie props from the sets they were used on. These can be a costly spend, but if it’s for a special someone, then you’ll find it worth the money. The items come and go, so be quick if you find something just right!
  • Classic Batman: The Dark Knight Comic Book - The new Batman movie with Heath Ledger as the Joker is still a few months off, but a comic lover already has it in his/her sights. If they’re that big of a fan, they’ll probably cosplay for the opening. Get them pumped up with some authentic gear.

Christmas is almost here so hopefully our suggestions may help you come up with something at the last minute!

The New Lightbox Feature on MyDisguises

    by collin

Picture me right now. A tattered white shirt loosely open, jeans, a casual tie hanging lightly off my neck, and fingers warm from the touch of a heated laptop. The condition could be called “coding position” or “geek face” if it were a medical condition. I’ve been trudging away at the blog trying to bring a more effective and attractive experience.

I found the lightbox plugin and decided to upload it. It should give us a easy way to post thumbnails and let you click them for a quick and cool-lookin’ image overlay to see the whole thing. It’s the newest feature to MyDisguises, and it’s worth all the work I put in to locating this exemplary display of someone elses effort.

Here is an image to try it out with…

Blog Action Day: A View From The Bottom

    by collin

    Blog Action Day Logo

What does “A View From The Bottom mean”? It means today we’re going to see things from the Earth’s point of view.

With as much grace and aptitude armed at my side, I have the charge of writing to you in an environmental matter. Today, readers, is Blog Action Day. Blogs across the Internet and entire world are leveraging the common voice to speak about the earth. While some of us are still very niche, and only appreciated by a small audience, others have become famous in their own rights. Blogs as they stand today, are very much the new media.

So in so many forms I took a pen to paper to scribble out innovative approaches to the topic while mingling with the underlying theme of MyDisguises. Yeah, it’s tough. However, I’m going to veer from a predictable approach and just say a few direct things on the matter.

First I want to pay homage to the community of readers here at MyDisguises. We have all kinds that come in to stop and peruse our archives of content. The common thread that runs through our demographic is creativity. We are all individuals looking for a way to see life differently. Our medium is costumes of all sorts. Our medium is the skin we wear outside of ourselves in order to experience things from different perspectives. With that, we have fun and communicate.

Second, I want to give a charge to all who see these pages. Take part in noticing the importance of our environment and what it provides us. Return those gifts by respecting our planet.  Ask yourselves how the things we do can be improved in every aspect to preserve the world. Lets try, in a collective manner, to stop taking more than we’re giving from time to time. Instant gratification will not always accompany our efforts, but we will see change so long as we’re willing to perpetuate it with small acts.

If I am candid with you, I would say that I wish I had greater and more specific suggestions on how to be environmentally aware with our subject matter. I don’t have anything revolutionary to say. However, I did think of a few good points that could potentially provide ideas for readers of the site. Here’s our contribution to Blog Action Day and our ideas for a greener experience in enjoying costumes.

    • This Halloween promote more natural treats that don’t produce great amounts of litter and trash. Our landfills are massive and recycling isn’t nearly as strong as it should be.
    • When creating your own costumes, be sure to use environmentally safe products. Although hairsprays, dyes, makeups, and other chemically based accessories might achieve some important looks there could be more clever ways to achieve the right look.
    • Used recycled items for your DIY projects. If you’re really hardcore, make a repository for such items that you can lend out to friends or family that want to join in similar projects.
    • Use your costume to promote environmental awareness. You don’t have to be terribly evangelical about it. Just help spread the message that we can respect the Earth.
    • This Halloween, don’t drive the kids around to Trick or Treat. Take them to a nice neighborhood that has houses close to one another. It’s more fun as well. Save on gas.

Answer the call that’s being set out across the blogosphere and live a bit more green this year.

As always, we call you out for great ideas and suggestions on how to promote green living for anyone involved in costumes. Leave your comments below.

Site of the Day: Fandango’s Halloween Haunt

    by collin

It’s amazing how rough it’s been for me to find good stuff to write on when it’s this close to Halloween. It seems that too much opportunity makes for tough decision making. Either way, I have some things to report on, so I’ll keep it coming.

I thought I’d draw everyone’s attention to this new Halloween site put up by Fandango. If you don’t know what Fandango is, then you either hate movies, hate the Internet, or just haven’t been informed. Fandango is a film site that sets readers up with reviews, movie times, and more.

Well this year they’re adding to the October festivities by launcing their Halloween Haunt site. From the looks of it, there’s more activity than you can shake a witches broom at. Yeah, I said it, witches broom.

Fangango is rocking a good deal of ideas for costumes, top 10 lists, polls, dirt on creepy movies, and a whole load of creepy imagery. If not just a sweet springboard for great Halloween ideas, it’s a nice place for a dose of Halloween news. Yeah, it’s that good. We suggest you read up there, but bookmark em next to us so you don’t lose track of all the radness that’s spouting from MyDisguises.

Top 5 “Less is More” Costumes, period.

    by evan

I was wondering to myself what makes a costume great. For most people it’s the frills, buttons, accessories, authenticity, and whatever else you can add to make it look like it took a lot of work. Frankly, these top 5 simple costumes prove that less truly is more.

    5. T-Shirt Ninja - Just Google these words and there are pages that teach you how to do this. It reminds me a lot of making T-Shirt Bikinis when I was a kid. It doesn’t matter who you are, t-shirt ninja masks are always a good option.

    4. Shower - Pretty Simple huh? Get some PVC pipe, a shower curtain, a shower head, and figure out how to hoist it up. Well, maybe not as easy as others… but I’d go to the small amount of trouble to be a shower any day.

    3. Napoleon Dynamite - Those Vote for Pedro shirts are everywhere. I guess the hardest part to pull off will be the ratty golden locks and the drained face look. I don’t know what dreams Jon Heder had at night to inspire him to make that movie, but the costumes were classics. If only we could get a Liger outfit.

    2. Naked Cowboy - Despite the very minimalist approach here, Naked Cowboy does be sure to sport some pretty flamboyant gear. If you manage to divert your eyes from the disbelief of his nakedness, you’ll notice some hideously decorated boots and a hat. Not to mention the fact that he desecrated a perfectly nice guitar with some cheesiness. In the end, there’s hardly anyone in New York who doesn’t know Naked Cowboy.

    1. Blue Man - I always wondered just how hard it is for these guys to get all blue. I’m sure there’s work involved. Despite that, the costume is about as simple as it gets, completely effective, and a mark of pop culture. That’s why Blue Man makes our number 1 spot.
